The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order

A regulatory reform order is a way of amending an Act of Parliament which imposes restraints on business or other activities. It prevents the need for a new Act of Parliament everytime a detail needs to be updated or added to. Like the Act it amends, a regulatory reform order has the full force of law.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO), coming into force on 1 April 2006, changes general fire safety law for non-domestic premises in England and Wales, making laws easier to comply with. (It will not cover Scotland and Northern Ireland, who have devolved responsibility for fire safety law.)

The main emphasis in the RRFSO is on fire prevention and assessing the risk of premises. The person ‘responsible' for each premises will now have to take into consideration the effect a fire may have on those around the premises, as well as inside it.

There is detailed information on the RRFSO on the DCLG Web site.

General information about Regulatory Reform Orders can be found on the Parliament Web site.
