A stakeholder says…The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) is a national charity committed to reducing the number of children killed, disabled or seriously injured in accidents. As house fires are the biggest killer of children in the home, fire safety is an important part of our work.
With children from the poorest homes 16 times more likely to die in house fires, tackling inequalities is a priority for CAPT. For example, we have developed innovative picture-based safety resources for parents with poor literacy – a problem affecting 40% of adults in social class V. One important strand of our work is community education and engagement, taking practical prevention messages out to parents and children, and to the front-line staff who work with them in their local communities. Through initiatives such as Child Safety Week – our flagship campaign supported by four government departments, including the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) – we provide resources and support, acting as a catalyst for thousands of local safety activities nationwide. Partnership is key to everything we do. At a national level, we work closely with the National Community Fire Safety Centre (NCFSC) and are members of DCLG’s Business and Community Safety Forum. At a local level, we encourage closer working relationships between community-based organisations such as Sure Start and their local fire and rescue service. Child Safety Week acts as a focus for partnership working – this year, almost threequarters of local activities involved inter-agency collaboration and over 90% of those involved in such activities expected their partnerships to continue beyond the week. And CAPT worked closely with NCFSC and Ei Electronics (a partner in fire prevention and a new sponsor for Child Safety Week) to achieve significant media coverage for fire safety messages. |
